Lead Tools Programmer

FreeStyleGames is looking for a lead tools programmer who will lead our talented in-house tools programming team.
The candidate will provide the vision for advanced, powerful & robust tools which build upon our existing suite of in-house tools, in addition to developing new tools required for the next generation of the award winning DJ Hero.
FreeStyleGames seeks candidates who are self motivated, able to show strong team leadership, and can deliver excellent results to agreed deadlines.

What the role involves.

The lead tools programmer will report to the Studio Technical Director.
This role is well suited to a programmer with a significant degree of experience in tools programming, who may wish to step up to a lead role, or who already has team leadership experience.
The right candidate will be expected to work with members of their programming team to produce strong designs, and review their work to ensure it is well engineered & documented. You will be responsible for creating schedules and managing your programmers to ensure on-time delivery of high quality tools.
You will work closely with senior team members from the creative and production departments within the FreeStyleGames team, to understand their requirements, and gain an understanding of the priorities across the whole of development. You will identify creative and pipeline requirements and devise technical solutions to allow the creative teams to deliver on their goals. You will need to provide visibility on the roadmap for the tools team and to communicate the priorities that the tools team is working to.
As well as leading & managing your team, you will be expected to be “hands on” - using your experience to get involved in writing code & developing tools yourself!

Key requirements:

● Strong C++ skills are essential - a minimum of 5 years C++ experience.
● Game code development experience, on current generation platforms (i.e. PS3, Xbox360, or Wii)
● Strong C# programming - a minimum of 2 years experience.
● Strong User Interface design skills.
● Experience of a broad variety of programming languages, script languages, UI toolkits, shell scripts. Examples include :

  1. C++, C#, C, Assembly languages.
  2. Script Languages : Python, Perl, LUA, PHP, Shell, Batch, MaxScript, MELscript, etc.
  3. Qt, .net, MFC, Win32, wx Widgets, or similar.

● Able to produce excellent documentation - both technical documentation for programmers (API documentation), and end-user documentation. E.g. Wiki based, .doc/.pdf.

● Excellent understanding of XML.
● Strong skills in creating robust, efficient, well organised and well documented code.
● Strong problem solving & debugging skills.
● Excellent communication skills, both spoken and written.
● Ability to produce work to agreed deadlines.
● Familiar with using Version Control software.

Additional beneficial skills & experience:

● Experience of console programming on any platform (PS2, Xbox, GameCube, PSP, PS3, Xbox360, Wii)
● Leading a team of 3 programmers or more, including schedule production, and schedule maintenance & management.
● Experience of using Regular Expressions.
● Experience of developing DCC tools, such as 3dsMax or Maya, and using their APIs and scripting to create plug-ins.
